Take the slow road. You won’t be disappointed.
Taking the back roads is a great prescription for putting life back in order. You’ll be introduced to well kept fields, scenic overlooks, forgotten farms, century old fence lines, colorful landscapes and definitely– a slower pace.
A back road is a short cut to a cheese factory or a corner church. Along the way are ring-neck pheasants on the roadside and a wild turkey or two…or ten. If you are surprised by a summer shower, pull over to inhale the clean smell of rain, fresh cut hay and newly turned earth.
Dunn County is home to Rustic Road # 89. The Rustic Road system was established in 1973 to give visitors to Wisconsin a chance to explore some of the rural areas at a slower pace. Rustic Road #89 is 5.3 miles in length and follows the western bank of the Red Cedar River.
Touring Routes
When you are ready to go for a drive, just turn the key, check the gas gauge and adjust the sunglasses. That’s the only action you’ll need to take to turn a ho-hum day into one filled with memories. A destination isn’t required.

For more of a challenge, we’ve developed four different Touring Road Rally routes. A touring road rally is a time-speed-distance motoring event that requires navigation skills as well as driving ability. Competitors must determine their proper time of arrival. Success is measured by arrival at the destination point being neither early nor late, for a perfect time. Pick your favorite navigator and give it a try. For route maps>
